Mr. Alex Carlile

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland how many people in Scotland(a) sat and (b) passed secondary examinations in (i) German, (ii) Italian, (ii) Latin and (iv) Spanish in each year since 1987; and if he will make a statement.

The available information, which has been obtained from the Scottish Examination Board's annual report, for all Scottish certificate of examination candidates is given in the table. It is Government policy to promote the study of foreign languages in schools described in SOED circular 1178 of 12 January 1989.
