§ Mr. WrayTo ask the Secretary of State for Scotland how many dyslexic children are receiving special education assistance in Scotland; and if he will make a statement about Her Majesty's Government's plans to help dyslexic people's education.
§ Mr. Michael ForsythThe information requested is not held centrally.
Responsibility for the education of children with specific learning difficulties, including dyslexia, lies with education authorities, which employ learning support teachers for that purpose. Additionally, the Scottish Office Education Department has commissioned from Stirling university a research study of policy, practices and provision for children with specific learning difficulties. This will offer guidance about the needs of such children and will identify any gaps in provision. The research will be completed in 1992.
