HC Deb 20 February 1991 vol 186 c177W
Mr. Cryer

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what information he has on the claim by the Soviet Prime Minister Valentin Pavlov that western banks were in a plan to destabilise the Soviet currency; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Douglas Hogg

We have no information to substantiate Mr. Pavlov's claim. Both our interests and those of the Soviet Union would be best served by the emergence of a free market there. An unstable currency would hinder, not help that process.
