HC Deb 19 February 1991 vol 186 c73W
Mr. Lawrence

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what information he has on the numbers of, or trend in, the numbers of animal experiments since the implementation of the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986.

Mrs. Rumbold

The number of scientific procedures performed on living animals since the introduction of the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986 is given in table 23 of "Statistics of Scientific Procedures on Living Animals, Great Britain I989"—Cm. 1152—a copy of which is in the Library. The table shows that the use of living animals in scientific procedures has been declining steadily for many years. The 1986 Act has given further impetus to this encouraging trend.
