HC Deb 14 February 1991 vol 185 cc558-9W
Mr. Canavan

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what was(a) total United Kingdom expenditure on health and (b) Government expenditure on health, expressing both as a percentage of GNP, in each of the last 20 years.

Mr. Dorrell

[holding answer 8 February 1991]: The table shows total United Kingdom expenditure on health and total public spending on health since 1970. It expresses each as a proportion of gross domestic product, rather than gross national product. GDP has been used in this presentation for the sake of consistency with other sources of information on public spending such as the autumn statement and the Budget report.
