HC Deb 14 February 1991 vol 185 c587W
Mr. Wray

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security whether he will seek to introduce legislation to control bank charges on retail transactions.

Mr. Maples

I have been asked to reply.

The Government see no need to introduce legislation to control the level of bank charges. These are commercial decisions for the banks and subject to competition.

Mr. Wray

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security if he will propose legislation to open bank operations to competition and scrutiny by bodies representing consumers' and clients' associations.

Mr. Maples

I have been asked to reply.

Banks are already subject to competition and scrutiny by consumer bodies.
