HC Deb 06 February 1991 vol 185 cc188-9W
Mr. Amos

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will make a statement on the progress in implementing a smoke-free policy throughout his Department.

Mr. Lang

In April 1990 smoking restrictions were applied, permitting smoking in working rooms during specified periods only. Since October 1990 smoking has not been permitted in working rooms at any time. Areas in each main building have been set aside for use by smokers. Special counselling services were arranged for 262 smokers who requested them.

Mr. Amos

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will make it his policy to ensure that every non-smoking employee in his Department has the right to work in a smoke-free area; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Lang

All staff in the Scottish Office work in smoke-free conditions. Since 1 October 1990 smoking has not been permitted except in areas set aside for this purpose.
