To ask the Secretary of Stale for Scotland what was the level of manufacturing productivity in Scotland in(a) 1979, (b) 1987 and (c) the latest date for which he has figures.

The latest available figures relate to 1989. Information on Scottish manufacturing productivity in 1979, 1987 and 1989 are set out in the following table:

Between 1979 and 1989 Scottish manufacturing productivity increased by 4.6 per cent. per annum, a rate of growth greater than that of the United Kingdom, Canada, United States of America, west Germany, France, Japan or Italy.
