HL Deb 19 December 1991 vol 533 cc85-6WA
Lord Kennet

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether the United States Administration has discussed with them their proposals to assist in the destruction or storage of Soviet nuclear weapons currently located in the Ukraine; what is their own view of these proposals; and whether they will insist that there is British, NATO or Western European participation, given that the weapons in question are as much a threat to Western Europe as to the United States.

The Earl of Caithness

We are strongly of the view that all NATO allies have an interest in what happens to Soviet nuclear weapons. We have already had discussions with the United States and other NATO allies about practical assistance to the Soviet Union and the Republics. NATO Foreign Ministers will discuss this matter in the North Atlantic Council on 19th December.
