HC Deb 12 December 1991 vol 200 c496W
Mr. William Ross

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will list the African countries which are multi-party democracies.

Mrs. Lynda Chalker

At present, the following African countries are multi-party democracies: Benin, Botswana, Cape Verde, Cote D'Ivoire, Gambia, Mauritius, Namibia, Sao Tome and Principe, Senegal, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Many other African countries are currently in the process of introducing multi-party democracies. Her Majesty's Government are actively encouraging this process and have announced a number of measures to assist it.
