HC Deb 11 December 1991 vol 200 c434W
Sir David Steel

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department when he last met representatives of the Radio, Electrical and Television Retailers Association; what consideration he has given to the adoption of a legal constraint which would prevent the BBC's commercial use of the licence database; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Peter Lloyd

I met representatives of RETRA on 29 October to discuss the BBC's use of television licensing information. I invited RETRA to contribute to the forthcoming debate preceding the expiry of the BBC's charter in 1996, and to discussion of the draft EC directive on data protection. We have no proposals meanwhile to introduce legal restraints beyond the present Data Protection Act.
