HC Deb 09 December 1991 vol 200 c335W
29. Sir Teddy Taylor

To ask the Secretary of State for Energy what has been the change in the price of gas and electricity, respectively, since privatisation compared to the retail prices index.

Mr. Wakeham

Since privatisation in 1986, the average price for all supplies of gas from British Gas has increased by 10 per cent., compared with an increase in the retail prices index (RPI) of 30 per cent. over the same period. The average price of all electricity sold has increased by 3.7 per cent. since the regional electricity companies in England and Wales were privatised in the fourth quarter of 1990, whereas the RPI has increased by 3.2 per cent.
