HL Deb 09 December 1991 vol 533 c21WA
Lord Hylton

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will make representations to the Government of Burma concerning the closure of the universities of that country over the last three years and whether they will also ask UNESCO to intervene.

Lord Cavendish of Furness

Since Burma's universities were re-opened in May this year, the Government have no plans at present to make such representations. But we greatly regret the way in which these closures and other restrictions on university staff and students have disrupted the higher education system in Burma. UNESCO are fully aware of the state of the education system in Burma and are already working there to assist its future development.
