HC Deb 05 December 1991 vol 200 c231W
Mr. Robert Hughes

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland how many electoral registration officers in Scotland are scrutinising the electoral register for foreign sounding names and thereafter asking each voter so identified to sign a declaration that they are British subjects; and if this is being done on his advice.

Lord James Douglas-Hamilton

Electoral registration officers have a responsibility, under the Representation of the People (Scotland) Regulations 1986, to satisfy themselves that the electoral register properly contains the names of those entitled to be registered. It is for electoral registration officers themselves to decide how they should fulfil this requirement.
