HC Deb 03 December 1991 vol 200 c112W
20. Mr. French

To ask the Secretary of State for Health how the number of female general practitioners has changed since 1979.

Mrs. Virginia Bottomley

The number of female general practitioners—unrestricted principals—has risen by some 90 per cent., from 3,261 in October 1979 to 6,187 in April 1991. The proportion of female general practitioners has nearly doubled from around one in seven in 1979 to one in four in 1991.
