HC Deb 22 April 1991 vol 189 c298W
Mr. Redmond

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will make a statement on the maximum security alert at Lewes prison on 27 March; and if he will list for the last 12 months the number of times Lewes prison has been put on maximum security alert; and for what reasons.

Mrs. Rumbold

Following the discovery of live ammunition at Lewes prison, the governor made arrangements for a full scale search of the prison buildings and grounds. This search took place on 26 and 27 March. Investigations are in progress. There were full alerts called to carry out extensive searching at Lewes on the following occasions during the last 12 months: 22 November 1990; 2 to 6 December 1990.
