To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, pursuant to his answer,Official Report, column 112, of 15 April, if he will estimate the number of sharks represented by the import of 3,838 tonnes of shark fins into Hong Kong in 1990.

Mr. Garel-Jones

It is difficult, if not impossible, to estimate the number of sharks represented by the weight of shark fins imported into Hong Kong in 1990 since

  1. (a) the imported fins are obtained from sharks of different species and different maturity; and
  2. (b) the fins vary widely in size and weight.
