Mr. Strang

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what representations he has(a) received and (b) made to the Brazilian Government in connection with human rights concerns regarding protection by federal police of rural workers facing death threats.

Mr. Garel-Jones

We are in regular touch with the Brazilian authorities and with NGOs in UK regarding the human rights situation in Brazil. No specific representations have been made to the Brazilian Government on the circumstances of rural workers.

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make representations to the Brazilian Government in connection with human rights concerns about federal police protection for Fr. Ricardo Figuera, Carlos Cabral Pereira, Sebastiao Vieira da Silva, Roberto Neto da Silva, Fr. Vardario Lopes Costa and Orlando Canuto Pereira, who are involved with representation of Rio Maria rural workers.

Mr. Garel-Jones

Her Majesty's embassy in Brasilia is looking into the cases of those mentioned and I look forward to receiving their report.
