§ Mr. DalyellTo ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what steps he has taken to encourage or to assist Scottish companies to contribute to the rebuilding of the infrastructure in Kuwait; and with what response.
§ Mr. Allan StewartThe Department of Trade and Industry has the lead role for ensuring that all United Kingdom companies are fully informed about, and assisted to participate in, the rebuilding and re-equipping of Kuwait.
Within the overall United Kingdom effort the Scottish Office Industry Department and Scottish Enterprise are working together to ensure that companies in Scotland can take full advantage of any opportunities which arise. Details of the names and capabilities of over 300 companies have been passed to DTI for inclusion in their Kuwait database and these companies will be informed about developments and opportunities as they arise, Both bodies, together with DTI, were instrumental in organising an extremely successful business briefing on rebuilding Kuwait in Edinburgh on 4 April. The Department also ensured that Scottish interests were represented in a delegation of United Kingdom businessmen, led by my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry, which visited Kuwait from 8 to 11 April.
