Mr. Stott

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland (1) what proposals he has to provide core funding for the Ulster People's college as part of the cross-community education initiative;

(2) what funds have been received by the Ulster People's college from his Department since 1982; and for what purposes;

(3) what request he has received from the Ulster People's college for funding for full-time staff for community relations work.

The Department of Education has made available to the college grants totalling £153,132 as follows£65,132 from 1982 to 1988 in respect of the salary and other costs, including the production of learning materials, of a tutor-organiser undertaking a project on "Culture and Political Education"; £60,000 from 1985 to 1988 in respect of a community area education project; and £30,000 in 1990 in respect of a contribution towards the purchase of the college premises.

In 1989, the college requested the Department of Education to provide an annual grant of approximately £160,000 for community relations activities. No offer of annual grant was made and the Department has no plans to provide core funding grant aid to the college at the level sought.

In 1990, the Department undertook to make a £25,000 grant, initially in 1991–92 and in 1992–93, for the development of a community relations project among young people.
