HL Deb 31 October 1990 vol 522 c1891WA
Lord Hylton

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they have information on the present condition of the 37,000 or so Iraqi Kurdish refugees in camps in S.E. Turkey; and in particular whether their tents are worn out; and if so, how they will be enabled to survive the coming winter.

Lord Reay

The Turkish authorities have refused repeated applications from our embassy to visit the camps housing Iraqi Kurdish refugees. We have no first-hand information of conditions in them or of the need to replace tents. We have urged the Turkish Government to reconsider their decision not to go ahead with the previously agreed 13 million dollars UNHCR programme to rehouse the refugees, or to put forward alternative plans for the use of those funds.
