asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether, in respect of the office of President of the EC Commision, Vice-President and Commissioner respectively, they will state in Sterling (ecu 0.690904 to £1), the total annual monetary emoluments attaching to their posts supported by a detailed breakdown showing

  1. (a) salary,
  2. (b)subsistence allowance,
  3. (c) travel allowances, and
  4. (d) all other allowances; and whether they will also provide particulars as regards
  5. (e) normal pension entitlements,
  6. (f) pensions on retirement due to disability,
  7. (g) severance pay and details of all other perquisites and benefits in kind, and
  8. (h) liability to EC Income Tax.

Lord Reay

The total basic gross salary of the president of the Commission is 7,356,120 Belgian francs a year (£122,602.00 at 60BFr. to £1 sterling); that of a vice-president 6,663,180 BFr (£111,053): and that of a commissioner 5,996,880 BFr (£99,948). From this is deducted a graduated Community tax on official salaries. A number of allowances are also payable. We will write to the noble Lord separately with the details.
