What action they propose to take with regard to the London Borough of Camden under Part I of the Local Government Act 1988.

My right honourable friend the Secretary of State for the Environment has today issued a direction under Section 14 of the Local Government Act 1988 on the London Borough of Camden in relation to refuse collection and street cleaning work. The direction requires the authority to expose this work to competitive tendering again by 1st August 1991, and to obtain the Secretary of State's consent to any decision that the authority's Direct Service Organisation (DSO) should take part in the new tendering exercise, and also to any decision again to assign the work to the DSO.
