HL Deb 29 October 1990 vol 522 c1763WA
Lord Strathcarron

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will encourage the installation of emergency telephones on long stretches of dual carriageway passing through open countryside as on the A.303.

The Minister of State, Department of Transport (Lord Brabazon of Tara)

The Government recognise the need for emergency telephones at certain sites on all-purpose trunk roads. On 16th May 1989 the Department of Transport announced that it was to provide over 140 telephones at priority sites on trunk roads which have most of the characteristics of motorways or which run through remote areas. That announcement followed heavy use of telephones installed as a pilot scheme on the A.180 in Humberside. The initial programme is being implemented and includes the installation of four telephones at selected sites on the A.303.
