HC Deb 23 October 1990 vol 178 c166W
Mr. Pawsey

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is the percentage of young people who stay on at school after age 16 years; and what steps are being takken to increase the number.

Mr. Eggar

The Government have achieved a substantial increase in the number participating in post compulsory full-time education. In 1989–90 35 per cent. of 16-year-olds were attending school compared with 28 per cent. in 1979–80. In addition, 20 per cent. were in full-time education in FE colleges compared with 14 per cent. in 1979–80. Our examination reforms and the Education Reform Act will raise standards and give more young people the qualifications and motivation to stay on at school.
