HC Deb 15 October 1990 vol 177 c708W
Mr. Austin Mitchell

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what steps are taken to assess the number of cases on which interest relief is being given on mortgages taken out for purposes other than home purchase.

Mr. Maude

For loans taken out from 6 April, 1988, mortgage interest relief is given only where the loan is applied to the purchase of a person's sole or main residence or for the purchase of life annuities by people aged 65 or over.

Mrs. Gorman

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer, what representations he has received calling for abolition of mortgage interest tax relief.

Mr. Maude

My right hon. Friend the Chancellor of the Exchequer receives a variety of representations about mortgage interest relief, ranging from extension to abolition.
