HL Deb 29 November 1990 vol 523 c35WA
The Earl of Selkirk

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they have any information regarding the political situation in Tibet, and whether Tibet is a colony of China.

The Earl of Caithness

Tibet was proclaimed an autonomous region of the People's Republic of China in 1965. Successive British Governments have recognised the special position of the Chinese authorities in Tibet. Detailed information on the current political situation is scarce, but the Government are concerned about reports of human rights violations there and have made representations to the Chinese Government.
