§ Lord Hyltonasked Her Majesty's Government:
Whether they will take up with the Chinese Government, and with the group of MPs from China shortly due to visit Britain, the cases of Agyal Tsering, imprisoned; Tseten Norgye, tortured and imprisoned; Yula Dawa Tsering, held in solitary confinement and chains, then sentenced to 10 years' imprisonment; all for minor political acts in Tibet.
The Minister of State, Foreign and Commonwealth Office (The Earl of Caithness)The visit of the Chairman of the National People's Congress did not take place. During the recent visit of the Chinese Vice Foreign Minister I explained to him the widespread public concern about human rights violations in China, including Tibet. We shall continue to raise these issues in our contacts with the Chinese Government.
We understand that four Scandinavian Ambassadors in Peking, who recently visited Tibet, were allowed to meet Yulo Dawa Tsering. They are said to have found him in fairly good health, given his circumstances.
