HL Deb 22 November 1990 vol 523 c29WA
Lord Hylton

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What representations they have made to the government of Turkey concerning 290 persons facing the penalty of death, many of whom were arrested on political charges and subjected to torture; and whether they will take action on this matter through the European Community and the Council of Europe.

The Earl of Caithness

Reports of impending executions are misleading. The Turkish Government have taken no such decision. A statement by a Turkish State Minister on 14th October advocating that death sentences should be carried out on convicted prisoners represented his own personal position, not official Turkish Government policy.
