HC Deb 01 November 1990 vol 178 cc735-6W
46. Mr. Jack

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what assistance is available to help local police forces suddenly faced with a sharp upsurge of violent crimes.

Mr. Peter Lloyd

Government support for the police is provided in a number of ways, including an increase in expenditure on the police of almost 59 per cent, in real terms since 1979, an increase in the number of police officers of over 15,300 and specific grant of 51 per cent, on police expenditure. It is the responsibility of chief officers to deploy these resources in response to violent crime or any other priority. It is clear that this is being done to good effect so that there are high clear-up rates for violent crime of which there is a lesser incidence in England and Wales than in most European countries, the United States, Canada and Australia.
