4. Mr. Simon Coombs

31. Mr. David Evans

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what plans he has to reform the law on Sunday trading.

45. Mr. Barry Field

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the Government's policy on reform of the Shops Act 1950; and if he will make a statement.

Mrs. Rumbold

Since the then Home Office Minister of State, my right hon. and learned Friend the Member for Putney (Mr. Mellor), answered a similar question from my hon. Friend the Member for Hendon, South (Mr. Marshall) on 12 July at column318, 11,321 written representations broadly in favour of Sunday trading and 18 against have been received.

It is clear that there is common ground between the interested parties on certain issues such as removing opening restrictions from small convenience stores and garden centres. We continue to encourage discussion on such matters to reach agreement in those areas where wide divisions of opinion still exist.
