HC Deb 01 November 1990 vol 178 c726W
3. Mr. Anthony Coombs

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what efforts motor manufacturers have made in the last year to improve the quality of car security.

Mr. John Patten

I am aware that some motor manufacturers have taken steps to improve the quality of security in their cars, but much more remains to be done. I am currently awaiting a report from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders on how best progress will be made in Europe towards a new mandatory common standard on car security, what plans manufacturers have for voluntarily building better security into their cars and what manufacturers are doing to encourage car buyers to give a higher priority to car security when buying a car.
