HC Deb 01 November 1990 vol 178 cc740-1W
Mr. Patchett

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many special constables has South Yorkshire(a) proportionate to the population and (b) proportionate to other counties; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Waddington

South Yorkshire has an estimated population of 1,293,000 of whom 316 are members of the special constabulary. Appendix 7 of the report of Her Majesty's chief inspector of constabulary lists the number of special constables and the population of force areas for each police force in England and Wales, a copy of which is available in the Library.
