HC Deb 01 November 1990 vol 178 c729W
18. Dr. Goodson-Wickes

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what representations he has received about sentencing policy for the guidance of magistrates courts.

Mr. John Patten

We invited comments on the White Paper "Crime, Justice and Protecting the Public" (Cm. 965) and received about 200 responses from organisations and individuals, the overwhelming majority of whom welcomed its proposals.

47. Mr. Gill

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what steps he is taking to ensure that offenders receive appropriate sentences.

Mr. John Patten

Our proposals for a coherent statutory framework for sentencing, so that the sentence reflects the seriousness of the crime, were set out in the White Paper, "Crime, Justice and Protecting the Public" (Cm. 965). We will introduce legislation to implement those proposals as soon as parliamentary time allows.
