HC Deb 01 November 1990 vol 178 c674W
Mr. Win Griffiths

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is the latest information he has about the number of teachers in secondary schools who are teaching subjects for which they have(a) no degree qualification, (b) no A-level qualification and (c) no O-level qualification.

Mr. Fallon

In 1988 the proportion of tuition in maintained secondary schools in England provided by teachers who did not have a post A-level qualification in the subject taught or in a closely related one was 20 per cent. The proportion of tuition provided by teachers for whom the subject taught was not the main subject of a degree was 61 per cent. This information is taken from the 1988 secondary school staffing survey, copies of which are available in the Library.

No information is available on the A and O-level qualifications of secondary teachers.
