HC Deb 01 November 1990 vol 178 cc665-6W
Sir David Price

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security what percentage of people currently retiring will receive more than the basic rate by way of retirement pension.

Mrs. Gillian Shephard

The precise information requested is not available. However, during the six-month period ending 31 March 1989, 57 per cent, of those awarded basic retirement pension received an additional pension from the state earnings-related pension scheme. Many pensioners also received a small award from the earlier graduated retirement pension scheme. In addition, the latest figures available—for 1987—show that 73 per cent, of all recently retired pensioners receive additional income from occupational pensions.

Mr. Cummings

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security if he will list the number of state retirement pensioners in Easington in each of the last five years.
