HC Deb 01 November 1990 vol 178 cc666-7W
Mr. Redmond

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security what was the community charge benefit case load, as at 30 September, for the Doncaster standard region.

Mrs. Gillian Shephard

The 31 August 1990 quarterly count of community charge benefit claims in local authorities is not yet available. However, the number of community charge benefit claims as at 31 May 1990 for the Doncaster standard region was 660,000—couples count as one. The May 1990 data reflect a time when local authorities in England and Wales were coping with the introduction of the community charge scheme and were faced with large numbers of unprocessed claims. The May 1990 figure of 660,000 is, therefore, likely to understate the true position.
