HC Deb 01 November 1990 vol 178 c731W
29. Mr. Speller

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department in how many of Her Majesty's prisons there is a regime of hard physical outdoors work for younger, healthy inmates; and what plans he has for the extension of such regimes.

Mrs. Rumbold

Information on regime activities in individual establishments is not held centrally but a number of establishments offer opportunities for purposeful and physically demanding outside work. In 1989–90, an average of 1,500 inmates a week were employed on building maintenance and refurbishment, and at 31 March 1990, some 1,900 inmates were employed on farms and gardens activities. It is the policy of the Prison Board to enhance and develop regimes and to ensure that the facilities of prison industries and farms are used to the best effect.
