HC Deb 01 November 1990 vol 178 c672W
Mrs. Clwyd

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs whether any British aid has been given or offered for road building projects in Malaysia; and if he will make a statement.

Mrs. Chalker

In 1989 the Government offered to finance a study of a proposed road building project connecting the Genting Highlands, Frasers Hill and the Cameron Highlands. This offer is still under discussion with the Malaysian authorities. Apart from this offer we have not provided or offered aid for road building projects in Malaysia in recent years.

Mrs. Clwyd

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs whether any British aid has been given or offered for gas turbine projects in Malaysia in 1989 or 1990; and if he will make a statement.

Mrs. Chalker

The Government have recently offered £23.485 million from the aid and trade provision to finance waste heat recovery units for the gas turbines at the Connaught Bridge power station. These units will increase fuel efficiency by an estimated 50 per cent. Apart from that commitment, we have not provided or offered aid for gas turbine projects in Malaysia in 1989 or 1990.
