To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what is his estimate of the present numbers of the population of Hong Kong(a) registered or (b) eligible to register as Hong Kong British dependent territory citizens.

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

According to Hong Kong Government statistics:

  1. (a) the estimated number of Hong Kong British dependent territories citizens, principally by birth, descent, registration and naturalisation, is 3.56 million. The number of those who have acquired BDTC status by registration alone is about 5,200; and
  2. (b) the estimated number of Hong Kong residents eligible for naturalisation or registration as BDTCs is 1.9 million.
