To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will list the foreign languages taught in schools in England and Wales in order of popularity.

The five modern foreign languages most commonly taught in maintained schools in England are, in order of popularity, French, German, Spanish, Italian and Russian. A number of other languages are taught to a lesser extent. Schools in Wales are a matter for my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Wales.
