Mr. Austin Mitchell

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment whether he will publish in theOfficial Report a table showing the increase since (a) April 1979 and (b) April 1989 in real average weekly earnings for (i) full-time adult male and (ii) full-time adult female workers, including overtime but excluding absence in the case of (w) manual workers in manufacturing, (x) other manuals, (y) non-manuals and (z) journalists; and if he will provide similar figures for the period April 1974 to April 1979.

Information on the average gross weekly earnings of full-time adult employees at April of the years in question is published in part A of the annual new earnings survey reports with the exception of manuals in non-manufacturing in the last two years, for which the figures are as follows:

The available information for journalists can be found in table 8 of the reports for 1979, 1989 and 1990. Information on the retail prices index—all items—to convert the figures to 1990 prices is published in table 6.4 of Employment Gazette for April 1989 and 1990. and in table 26 of the annual supplement to Economic Trends for April of earlier years. To ask the Secretary of State for Employment whether he will publish in the Official Report a table showing the percentage increase between 1988 and 1989 in the average earnings of full-time adult male manual workers in manufacturing, including overtime and excluding absences, and the corresponding increases for(a) the whole economy and (b) non-manuals in (i) banking, finance, insurance and business services, (ii) banking and finance and (iii) education and health; and whether he will add figures for manuals employed in (c) mechanical engineering and (d) clothing, footwear and textiles.
