HC Deb 21 May 1990 vol 173 c47W
Mr. David Young

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will make a statement on the banning by local education authorities of British meat from school meals in the interests of children's health in view of concern over bovine spongiform encephalopathy.

Mr. Alan Howarth

My right hon. Friend the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food has circulated advice and guidance about bovine spongiform encephalopathy to all local authorities and the chief medical officer has clearly stated that British meat is safe. My right hon. Friend hopes that education authorities will take full account of that advice in considering the provision of British meat in school meals.
