HC Deb 08 May 1990 vol 172 c35W
23. Mr. Cyril D. Townsend

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what discussions he has had recently with the National Union of Teachers concerning the public standing of teachers.

Mrs. Rumbold

This issue has arisen in a number of separate discussions that my right hon. Friend has had with the National Union of Teachers. Its leaders know how much we value the professionalism and hard work being shown by the great majority of teachers and understand our concern that the growing public recognition of this could easily be undermined by action which disrupts children's education and which lowers the standing of the teaching profession.
