HC Deb 08 May 1990 vol 172 c69W
Mr. Wray

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what special financial incentives Her Majesty's Government are giving to Scottish students in order to increase their training in foreign languages.

Mr. Lang

Financial incentives are not offered specifically to encourage students to undertake language courses, but the normal student support arrangements apply to a wide range of language courses and to courses which include a language together with another subject.

In addition, Scottish domiciled students wishing to undertake part of their course abroad, with the associated foreign language training, may participate in the European Community action scheme for the mobility of university students (ERASMUS). This programme provides specialist assistance for that purpose, in addition to the general assistance available under the students' allowances scheme.
