HC Deb 27 March 1990 vol 170 c173W
25. Mr. Chris Smith

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what additional support he has made available to British scientists seeking to build up contacts with eastern European scientists since the process of liberalisation began in 1989.

Mr. Jackson

In the 1989 public expenditure survey the science budget was increased by £175 million. I am sure that the research councils, the Royal Society and the Fellowship of Engineering will be considering the new opportunities in eastern Europe as they decide how they allocate the resources made available to them.
