To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many people are employed by the Inland Revenue in(a) administering and (b) collecting income tax.

Mr. Lilley

[holding answer 20 March 1990]: The staff costs of (a) administering and (b) collecting income tax are around 41,500 and around 6,500 man years respectively. These figures do not include the staff costs of certain central functions which relate to the running of the Inland Revenue as a whole.
