HC Deb 22 March 1990 vol 169 c748W
36. Mr. Alex Carlile

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what representations he has received regarding the implications for civil liberties of the public availability of personal information as a result of the introduction of the community charge.

Mr. Mellor

None. The only information which can be made available to the public from the community charge register is the address, surname and initials of those subject to the charge. This information may be inspected, but not copied out, by members of the public.

52. Mr. Nellist

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will call for a report from the data protection registrar into the number of incidents of alleged misuse of information held by poll tax registration officers; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Mellor

My right hon. and learned Friend has no powers to do so. Any evidence of misuse of automated personal information will be investigated by the registrar, who has the responsibility for enforcing the Data Protection Act 1984.
