HC Deb 22 March 1990 vol 169 c753W
62. Mr. Orme

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will make a statement on his monitoring of the effect of community policing on crime levels.

Mr. Peter Lloyd

The effectiveness of each community policing initiative must be judged on its merits by the responsible chief office of police. This will involve both an assessment of the impact on crime levels and on police relations with the public, together with associated factors such as fear of crime. Her Majesty's inspectorate of constabulary, during its inspection of forces, examines in some detail the aims and objectives of each force and the means by which it is intended to measure effectiveness. In addition, a Home Office research study is currrently examining a wide range of community policing strategies and their effects upon local people.
