HC Deb 21 March 1990 vol 169 cc630-1W
Mr. Caborn

To ask the Secretary of State for Energy what functions his Department carries out at the regional level; where the regional offices are located in each of the regions; what staff are employed and at what grades; what proportion of his Department's budget is spent in each of the regions; and what geographical boundaries determine his Department's regions.

Mr. Wakeham

The only regional service my Department provides is the promotion of energy efficiency. The staff concerned are located in the DTI's regional offices. The details are set out in the table:

Region Location Staff
North East Newcastle upon Tyne 3
North West Manchester 3
Yorkshire and Humberside Leeds 3
East Midlands Nottingham 3
West Midlands Birmingham 3
East London (moving to Cambridge) 3
Greater London London 2
South London 3
South West Bristol 3

The staff in each region are one grade 7, one higher executive officer (HEO) and an administrative officer except in Greater London where there is no HEO. The proportion of my Department's running costs accounted for by these staff is 1.75 per cent. which may be roughly equally divided between the regions.

Contributions are also made to the Scottish and Welsh Offices for promoting energy efficiency, the amounts representing about 0.1 per cent. of my Department's running costs in each case.

A breakdown of my Department's total expenditure spent in the regions is not readily available.
